Sunday again......
This weeks question is:
What is the extent of religion's role in creating individual discontent and
unhappiness through ostracism, sexual repression, prejudice, etc. in various
world cultures..?

I can't think of a more enlightening example of religion's role than
the invasion, looting, plundering, extermination and rape of the
indigenous populations of the New World during the 1500 and 1600's,
all done under the sign of the cross |

I'd nominate the RC church and US evangelicals for the derailing of
anti-aids initiatives in Africa.
Funding is blocked in the UN (where the Vatican is a member as
though it were a state) for any initiative that does not focus
exclusively on abstinence. This prevents the free distribution of
condoms and thus causes an untold number of deaths that could be
otherwise avoided.
The RC church, in the guise of Cardinal Trujillo, is also on record
as saying that condoms have microscopic holes and do not protect
against aids - a downright lie to get its own way again:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2003/oct/09/aids
This is an excellent example of the stupidity of "absolute morals",
where an atheist using relative rational morality would save lives,
the religious insist on putting dogma first at the cost of countless
lives, with many Africans being widowed and orphaned.

Sexual repression in the RC church is enforced by permitting
copulation only for the purposes of procreation by a married
couple. Then there must be no attempt at any form of birth control
other than playing Pope's Roulette. Little wonder that few Catholics
obey the teaching of their church including many of their priests.
Why is the church so afraid of sex? As has been mentioned
contraception is desirable both to prevent the spread of STDs and to
limit the growth in the world's population.

well yes.....
Interesting then also, that this superstition of goddidit means that humans
were placed here, on earth, to procreate......as a basic human function.
Otherwise the species could not survive. Then, we discover (and only god
knows when he decided this to happen) the intervention of a *rule* about
relationships gets put into place......
I mean, if you follow this all the way back (under this christian fairy
tale) we get sex outside of marriage, we MUST have had sex with offspring
or brothers and sisters copulating...
This whole world from two humans means a lot of interbreeding... long, long
before any notion of the convention of marriage got dreamed up......
Actually, when was that...?
When did we integrate an institution of marriage........ any idea..?

The RC's position on birth control is just another illustration of
religion's backward thinking and adherence to a Dark Age's mentality.
Our species needs another worldwide pandemic to bring down the
population to a more manageable level, or perhaps a virus that only
attacks the religiously inclined |

You could go back earlier than that. Animals have paired off for
many years before we were capable of inventing marriage. Many
creatures pair for life. It is generally a good system for ensuring
that your genes get passed on and get a good start in life.
I don't have any problem in understanding why religions exist and
why they had these rules about marriage and no sex outside of
marriage. In the days before contraception, a society without these
rules would probably self destruct with uncontrolled pregnancies and
STDs. In evolutionary terms, it is easy to imagine why societies
that didn't have these religions and strict rules wouldn't survive -
hence religious belief is probably an evolved characteristic.
